CNBC Republican Presidential Debate 11/9/11

This is a rundown of links, video and a little of the Lady’s Take of the GOP debate held on November 9, 2011.

The Lady’s Take:

Preface: I thought the moderators for the Bloomberg one were the most screamingly awful liberals who were unable to control themselves. I was wrong. Every question had daggers in it. The tone with which questions were asked varied from moderator to moderator, but all of them seemed to be auditioning for the role of ‘hard hitting journalist’ in the next Scorsese movie. Maria Bartiromo was a nightmare. Sorry if any of you like her, but I think she was going for ‘tough and serious’, however what she came off as was bitchy and rude. Whoever thought it was a good idea to have Jim Cramer up there moderating should be fired. He was a nuisance and distracting is too mild a word. Their questions were abrasive, to be polite about it, and they managed to wait until near the end to ask the candidates what they would replace Obamacare with. Punchline: They gave them 30 second to answer. Really??

CNBC also had two crawls going at the bottom which I found seriously annoying. One was the stock ticker – they really  had to run that?? The other was a repeating viewer comment crawl, filled with wonderfully snarky and rude comments. Nice job picking those out, CNBC.

My Impressions: Cain has to get away from every answer starting with “my bold, fresh plan – 999”. We’re really over it and it makes him look like he has no further ideas. Romney was strong throughout, might have faded in the last third a bit. Santorum was calmer than any other debate, but he also had much less talking time. Bachmann didn’t make any huge gaffes this time, if you can believe it. She was steady this debate. Paul was Paul; his answers were so convoluted all night that the nuggets of truth in them were virtually lost. Huntsman needs to go home. Every time he opens his mouth a condescending diatribe comes pouring out accompanied by that smarmy look he perpetually wears. Gary Johnson was a no-show?

The Highlights:  The crowd booed the moderators a bit for asking Cain about the sexual harassment allegations. Cain was obviously expecting it and answered it gracefully. The crowd booed louder when they asked Mitt Romney what he thought about it. Romney’s answer was classy and put an end to that line of questioning. Perry had what was probably the worst moment I can remember when he froze up on the agencies question. Up until that point, he was have a very decent debate. Yikes, this might be the end for him. I was really pleased with Gingrich. His knowledge base is unmatched. Newt owned the moderators once again.

Clear winner of this debate was Newt Gingrich. The rest fall in behind him for me in this order: R0mney, Cain, Perry, Bachmann, Santorum, Paul, Huntsman.
